- Marvel appears to have revealed something big about Avengers: Doomsday's cast roster
- A recent Disney event reminded fans who's part of its huge ensemble
- The grouping of its various actors might have revealed the teams we'll see in the MCU film
Avengers: Doomsday continues to be shrouded in mystery ahead of its launch late next year. Indeed, Doomsday's December 18, 2026 release date and 27-strong cast roster notwithstanding, very little has been officially revealed about the highly-anticipated superhero film.
Thanks to a recent Disney presentation that took place in Italy, though, we might have learned which groups our heroes will split into to tackle Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom. And, if this information can be taken at face value, it raises a couple of interesting questions about the Marvel movie's plot.
Potential spoilers immediately follow for Avengers: Doomsday, so proceed at your own risk.
As the above video shows, it appears that there will be five teams of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) heroes to keep track of.
There are no surprises about four of these lineups. The Fantastic Four and The New Avengers – the latter were formerly known as the Thunderbolts – remain unchanged from their recent film outings. As expected, the legacy X-Men team only contains mutants, and then Shuri, M'Baku, and Namor are lumped together after the trio shared the screen in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The fifth group is where things get interesting, though, because it seems the rest of Doomsday's cast will form another Avengers team led by Sam Wilson's Captain America.
Captain America: Brave New World's ending revealed that Wilson was ready to reassemble Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and the Thunderbolts' installation as The New Avengers hasn't curtailed Wilson's ambition, with Thunderbolts' post-credits scene confirming that Cap 2.0 has pressed ahead with his plan.
Based on what was shown at the Disney Italy event, he's called in favors from heroes he not only knows, but who aren't currently part of a team. That includes long-time comrades in Danny Ramirez's Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, and Paul Rudd's Scott Lang/Ant-Man.
Interestingly, Simu Liu's Shang-Chi is also part of this lineup, which begs the question about how he becomes involved. Given that Shang-Chi is based in the same city as Lang, aka San Francisco, will the latter reach out to the former and convince him to join Wilson's collective?
The biggest thing that's piqued fans' interest about Cap's presumed team, though, is the apparent inclusion of Tom Hiddleston's Loki. Last time we saw The God of Mischief he was holding the multiverse's seemingly infinite number of timelines together to prevent its collapse. So, how can he be part of a team if he's otherwise engaged?
In my view, there are two scenarios. The first is that Loki is part of Cap's team due to his familial association with Thor, and the latter will be tasked with defending his brother if Doom comes calling to kill Loki and reset the multiverse in his image. Alternatively, Doom could locate Loki first, remove the latter from his multiverse-saving role, and cast him back to Earth. From there, Loki could ally himself with Sam's team, who could certainly use Loki's multiversal knowledge to track down Doom.
Of course, MCU fans – myself included – could just be reading too much into this latest presentation. But, with rumors circulating that Doomsday's first trailer could be released very soon, Disney might be preparing us for the team-ups we'll see as part of the Marvel Phase 6 film's inaugural teaser.
While we wait for the first official footage for one of 2026's most exciting new movies to drop, read up on everything we know so far about Avengers: Doomsday.
