"Christian Wolff is brought out of hiding by Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina after someone close to them is killed by unknown assassins. To solve the murder, Wolff must recruit the help of his estranged but highly lethal brother Brax."
What Was 'The Accountant' About?
Affleck made his first appearance as Wolff, a mathematics savant who held a lot more love and affection for numbers than he ever did for other people in the 2016 film. Wolff works as a forensic accountant for a number of no-good deviants and also uses a small-town chartered accountancy office as a front for hiding and laundering his money gained through these illicit acts. His life takes a turn for the worse when the U.S. Treasury Department's Crime Enforcement Division, led by Ray King (played by J.K. Simmons), pinpoints him as the money guy behind the criminal enterprises, in order to cover up his deeds and make himself seem totally legit, he takes on a job at a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (played by Anna Kendrick) has found a minor accounting discrepancy worth millions of dollars — like we all do when we realize we've overspent at Starbies that month. Suddenly, he finds himself in the crosshairs of a bigger threat.
Although it had a mixed reception from critics — currently sitting at 52% on Rotten Tomatoes — there was plenty of praise for Affleck's performance and the portrayal of neurodiversity through Wolff's autism, and the movie has been a huge hit on streaming which led to Amazon MGM Studios backing the sequel.
