This may come as a shock to some, but mattresses aren’t used solely for sleeping. As many sexually active people will tell you, the best mattress for sex lets you keep your mind off the bed itself and in the moment, as the last thing you want to be focusing on is a potential trip to the mattress store.
So, what exactly are the parameters that ensure a mattress is actually good for sex? As a professional mattress tester of five years, I've tested mattresses for all manner of purposes, including this one. You'll primarily need three things: temperature control for when things get hot and heavy in the most literal way; bounce, because overt sinking can really kill the vibe; and edge support, as the outer perimeter of the bed needs to be in a position to support you as you experiment with positions. Read on for the best options we’ve tested over the years.

Best Overall
The sleep experience and sex aren’t too far removed—you'll want something that makes you feel blissfully relaxed in both situations. Honestly, I can’t think of a mattress that offers a better intersection than the Nolah Evolution. This is a hybrid mattress with an organic cotton-covered pillow top, pressure-relieving foams, and pocketed coils. All that to say, it's very bouncy and responsive, so moving around should be seamless. There are also features to help with temperature control, like a heat escape gusset on the side. The memory foams and zoned coils are also designed to help with lumbar support, which I’ve found to be particularly helpful in instances of back pain.
The Nolah Evolution Hybrid ranges from $1,460 for a twin mattress to $3,454 for a split king.
Best Firm Option
People take a lot of pride in their bedroom abilities. Saatva takes a lot of pride in its ability to create luxurious, handmade mattresses. To keep up the good work in both these situations, this is a bed that has many design features pertinent to lovemaking. First, you can customize the firmness level you want: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm. I’d recommend you stick to the firmer options to avoid overt sinking, which can be a buzzkill. Height is also customizable with 11-inch and 14-inch options.
The variance in firmness and height also opens up this mattress for all kinds of couples to enjoy, not just for sex but for sleeping as well. Different body types or preferred sleeping positions can get the support each one needs. And to help do this, Saatva has an organic-cotton pillow top for keeping you cozy, a lumbar support layer, and two layers of pocketed coils for pressure relief—traditional and pocketed. Needless to say, with two coil layers, you’ll have no trouble with bounce. Use that to your advantage.
The Saatva Classic ranges from $1,400 for a twin mattress to $3,078 for a split California king.

Wolf
Memory Foam Hybrid Premium Firm Mattress
I tested the Wolf Memory Foam Hybrid in Premium Firm fairly recently, and there are quite a few features that make it a standout option for sex. First, as implied by the name, the overall firmness of the bed maintains a supportive surface. Weight is distributed well, so there’s no overload in one spot as you recline. It even maintains that strong support around the edges. This is helpful when you want to utilize the entire surface available to you. It won’t feel like being on the floor, as the memory foam top layer provides enough pressure relief to keep your joints from crying out. The firmness also keeps the bed responsive, so that it moves and keeps supporting you instead of overly sinking.
Wolf Mattresses are made to order in Texas, and the Premium Firm offers a cooling cover and gel memory foam meant for temperature regulation. Four more layers of memory foam follow, all of which fluctuate when it comes to offering pressure relief, support, and additional cooling. The pocketed coils in the middle are also made to keep motion from overly rocking the bed for co-sleepers or, in this case, sexy time. On the former, I’ve found that the bed does a good job of maintaining stability for even the most restless nights.
Saatva Classic ranges from $1,049 for a twin mattress to $1,399 for a king.
Best Bounce
This is one of WIRED reviewer Nena Farrell's top picks for back pain, as the overall sturdiness and firmness of this 14-inch behemoth promote support. You have three firmness options to choose from here, but for the purposes of support, Luxury Firm and Firm are solid choices. The other aspect of this hybrid mattress that makes it a qualified mattress for sexual activities is the overall responsiveness—otherwise known as bounce. The last thing you need is to be overly sinking into your mattress. You'll feel unstable and likely a bit too warm, especially if it's an all-foam bed.
A phase-change material cover feels cool to the touch and should shine along with some cooling sheets for the occasion. The quilted topper helps with lighter pressure relief, but support is upheld via specialized memory foam layers and springy pocketed coils.
Bear Elite Hybrid ranges from $1,998 for a twin mattress to $4,282 for a split king.

Bedgear
H Performance Mattress
WIRED reviewer Molly Higgins tested this mattress and found it to be cooling, comfy, and crowd-pleasing. It has two firmness levels: H6 is a medium plush, and H4 is a medium firm, the latter of which Molly has. It involves a cooling cover, CertiPUR-US-certified memory foams, air vents along the sides, and a foam-encased “suspension unit” meant for more weightless support.
According to Molly, the edge support leaves something to be desired. However, the motion isolation is strong so that it doesn’t feel like an overt earthquake when winding down to sleep or with things moving and shaking. The firmness level is also quite supportive, especially for those of different body types.
Bedgear H Performance (H4 and H6) ranges from $1,799 for a twin mattress to $2,899 for a split head California king.
For a Superb Sexy-Time Bed
Your mattress can't do all the hard work in supporting you during your fun. Your accessories can also make or break your experience (although you can try).
DreamCloud's The Bamboo Bed Frame and Headboard for $800: Just as I test mattresses, I also occasionally test bed frames. I've been massively impressed with this option, featuring a gorgeous wood stain and effortless Japanese joinery setup. More important, it's sturdy, stable, and quiet.
Buffy's Breeze Sheet Set for $160: When I asked WIRED sheets expert Nena Farrell what sheets she thought would be best for this topic, her first response was that there are plenty that she wouldn't recommend because they're too slippery. Traction is necessary, as you don't need to slip, fall, and have to explain in the emergency room what happened. The good news is that Buffy's Breeze sheet set uses cooling Oeko-Tex certified Tencel, which is grippy and hypoallergenic and uses plant-based dyes.
