Colman Domingo Says He Met with Marvel After the Jonathan Majors Replacement Casting Rumors but ‘Something Didn’t Feel Right’

Colman Domingo is set on joining the MCU… just not as a replacement for anyone else.

Domingo confirmed during the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (video below) that he did meet with Marvel to discuss potentially replacing Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conquerer. The character was slated to be the new villain of the latest Phase of the franchise; however, Majors was fired by Marvel parent company Walt Disney Co. after being found guilty of assault and harassment against his (now) ex-girlfriend in December 2023.

Domingo says that while he did have talks with Marvel about joining the universe — including a frank discussion about the Kang recasting rumors — those conversations did not happen as early as fans thought.

“When it was constantly in the press and on places like Twitter, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Is this true? Am I being talked about for Kang?’” Domingo said of rumors that he would take over for Majors. “I literally called up my team and said, ‘Are you guys having conversations that I have no idea about?’ And they said no. ‘Are you guys being cagey or what?’ They weren’t.”

Domingo continued, “There had been conversations of me coming into Marvel in some way, so we did follow up with a sit down meeting with the heads of Marvel. I did do that. We talked openly about the landscape of Marvel and the Kang rumors. I am all about energy. I want to do things that make sense and bring gentle energy. I want a role to be mine, whatever I develop. Something didn’t feel right to me about replacing someone. I want to build something from the ground up that is my own.”

And while Domingo explained that the Kang rumors were “never a conversation from my point of view,” he still is in contact with Marvel to portray a different comic book character.

“I want to build something from the ground up,” he said, “so there still are talks.”

Majors first appeared as Kang in “Loki” Season 2 and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” Kang was planned to lead two MCU installments, “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” but after Majors’ firing, it was announced that the films would be reworked. Robert Downey Jr. instead will be playing the new MCU villain, Doctor Doom, in the upcoming “Avengers” film retitled “Avengers: Doomsday.” Academy Award winner Downey previously played Iron Man for more than a decade in the MCU.

Majors, meanwhile, hopes for a career resurgence. He told TMZ that he would still play Kang if fans wanted him to and if Marvel would hire him again.

“Hell yeah! Hell yeah! I love him. I love Kang,” Majors said. “If that’s what the fans want, and that’s what Marvel wants then let’s roll. Hell yeah.”

Majors added that he was “heartbroken, of course” to not be part of the planned MCU rollout.

“I love Kang. Doctor Doom is wicked, though,” Majors said.
