Finally, a MagSafe accessory that's sturdy, highly-functional, and affordably priced

ZDNET's key takeaways

  • The Supcase MagFlip is a magnetic wallet and stand combo for $42.
  • It holds up to five cards, features RFID protection, and can be adjusted into several viewing configurations.
  • While a rugged option, the cards can be difficult to access, and it's rather bulky.

I'm a MagSafe fan. If there's anybody at ZDNET that's tested them all (or what feels like close to it) – it's me. I've used tons of MagSafe gear from dozens of brands, but let's face it, many of these products aren't the most durable.

Enter: the Supcase MagFlip wallet and stand. This is the most rugged MagSafe wallets I've tried, and it also has one of the highest stand features I've seen on the market, making it a double-whammy phone accessory.

It holds up to five cards, can be positioned into several unique configurations for personalized landscape or portrait viewing, and has RFID blocking for added security.

The wallet portion of the Supcase is average. It holds a nice amount of cards and the MagSafe grip is firm. But I struggled to open the cover lock (especially when the wallet was attached to my phone), which secures the cards and prevents them from falling out.

Removing the wallet from the device is always an option, making it easier to open for me. Once the lock is open, pushing the cards out is easy, but I don't recommend this wallet if you wear longer nails (I broke three testing this!) or struggle with dexterity. It's sorta tricky.

That being said, the design is far from minimalist and has a military design, with the six available colors fairly reflective of that. The best part about this wallet is truly the kickstand. It can be arranged just for casual viewing, but you can also maneuver it into a vlogging-like camera stand and -- my favorite -- a tripod, which is great for FaceTime or reading a recipe off your phone.

With the Supcase MagFlip, you can buy one MagSafe accessory with many benefits, which is a great deal when this wallet costs under $50. There's only one other tripod wallet accessory I've tried that's even similar -- the Moft Tripod wallet -- that's not nearly as rugged, holds fewer cards, and is more expensive than the Supcase MagFlip.

Also: I've tested dozens of MagSafe wallets, but this is the most premium one yet

While this is an excellent find for those seeking a rugged look, it will have a smaller audience appeal for a few reasons. First of all, it's bulky. I've tested a lot of MagSafe wallets of different designs, and this is one of the chunkiest I've tried. It's not necessarily bad; different designs are made for other users and lifestyles, but a thicker design is not conducive for lightweight carry or everyday use, for me at least.

As a Gen-Z woman in tech, I'm also more drawn to pastels, light neutrals, and more natural tones to match my aesthetic, so the moody hues of the Supcase MagFlip won't be for me, although the gold is particularly stunning.

Functionally, I struggled unlatching the metal lock, which is great for security but not for easily paying and going when I check out.

ZDNET's buying advice

If you're looking to get or gift a rugged and durable MagSafe accessory, I still recommend the Supcase MagFlip. The stand feature is one of the most functional, offering a height I've only seen in limited other designs, like Moft's Tripod wallet stand.

The price is very reasonable, especially if you can snag it on sale. It's not uncommon to see MagSafe accessories push over $60, so I find most functional options in the $30-50 range a decent value.

Keep in mind that this won't be for everyone, though. The color options aren't my favorite, and some elements, like the bulky design, wouldn't make this an everyday choice for me. However, my dad was already trying to steal this when I tested it over Father's Day weekend.
