For almost 20 years, there was limited chatter about a potential Freaky Friday sequel. Fans absolutely adored the Mark Waters-directed comedy film that came out in 2003 starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother and daughter, who switch bodies thanks to a magical Chinese fortune cookie. But when Lohan stepped away from acting, it seemed like a sequel would never happen. But lo and behold, Jamie Lee and Lindsay reunited with OG and new cast members in Freakier Friday in 2025!

Now that the sequel movie has reached theaters on August 8, 2025, get all the details on the movie below.

How Freaky Friday 2 Got the Green Light

Disney put Freaky Friday 2 into the works, according to a Variety report in May of 2023. The outlet reported that two decades later, Curtis and Lohan would be set to return in their original roles, with Elyse Hollander crafting the screenplay. Nearly a year later, Lohan confirmed the news during an interview on Andy Cohen‘s SiriusXM show in March 2024. After the host asked her whether the project was greenlit, Lohan replied, “It is. I don’t want to say too much, but it’s [happening]. And we’re both excited. I’m gonna speak for Jamie.”

Previously, Curtis appeared on The View back in October 2022 and admitted that she’d “already written to Disney” about making Freaky Friday 2. “I’m creatively wide open,” she said. “Bring it. Let me be the grandma. Let me be the old grandma who switches place [with Lindsay’s character]. So then Lohan gets to be the sexy grandma who is still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you’d be happy with Mark Harmon,” Curtis added. “Simply, I’d like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I’d like to see me try to deal with toddlers today.”

In February of 2023, Curtis told Variety at an event that it would happen. “It’s going to happen,” she said at the time. “Without saying there’s anything officially happening, I’m looking at you in this moment and saying, ‘Of course it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.”

Production on Freakier Friday

Disney Studios revealed that filming had officially begun on Freakier Friday in June 2024. The company shared an Instagram photo of Lohan and Curtis seated in front of their trailers on the set. “The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025! The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production,” the company wrote in the caption.

Lohan and Curtis also shared the photo, as well as a behind-the-scenes video of their photoshoot. “We’re back,” Lohan captioned her post. Curtis declared that it was “FREAK OUT TIME.”

The following month, on-set photos of the duo driving a red car were unveiled.

While Lindsay and Jamie are obviously returning to the sequel, the film will also see the return of quite a few other actors from the original film. Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal MitchellMark Harmon, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao all returned for the sequel,

Newcomers to the cast include Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Vanessa Bayer, Chloe Fineman and several others.

Why Did Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan Want Freakier Friday?

“As I went around the world with Halloween Ends, people wanted to know if there was going to be another Freaky Friday,” Curtis told The New York Times in a joint interview with Lohan in 2023. “Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.'”

Lindsay added, “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”

After Lindsay’s comments, a source close to the star confirmed to Hollywood Life at the time that she was in touch with Jamie Lee about the long-awaited project. “[Lohan and Curtis] are certain that they are going to make this happen and they have a ton of incredibly talented and willing people around them who are extremely determined to get this project off the ground and in the works,” the insider explained. “They already have a plot developed and are talking with several different studios and producers who are all extremely interested.”

The source added at the time, “For Lindsay, it is coming full circle. She is getting a second chance at her career, and she is determined to do it right this time. When she did Freaky Friday, that catapulted her into stardom. As she sits at the pinnacle of her massive comeback, she knows that this film will mean so much to her, just as it will to Jamie Lee.”
