Hallmark Football Christmas Movie — Is Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story Worth Watching? (& Where To Stream It Online)

1 month ago 9

Football Christmas movies are a rare combo but the Hallmark film, Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story, mixes the magic of the season with the excitement of the National Football League. Premiering on November 30, 2024, Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story follows Alana Higman (Hunter King), a Kansas City Chiefs fan who is competing alongside her family to win the Chief's "Fan of the Year" contest. The contest is being judged by Derrick Taylor (Tyler Hynes), the Chief's director of fan engagement who is new to town. It's a Christmas movie, romantic comedy, and sports film all in one.

Using the pop culture "it couple" of singer Taylor Swift and Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce as clear inspiration, Holiday Touchdown is more relevant than ever in 2025 with the Kansas City Chiefs making it to the Super Bowl against the underdog Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League. Ed Begley Jr., Megyn Price, Diedrich Bader, and Christine Ebersole also star in this film about the perennial football champs who are aiming for their third straight Super Bowl unless the talented and lovable Philadelphia Eagles can pull off the win, and bring joy to the countryside in Super Bowl LIX.

Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story Isn't Worth Watching

Holiday Touchdown Makes The Grave Mistake Of Focusing On The Inferior Kansas City Chiefs Rather Than The Philadelphia Eagles

Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story succeeds in just about every facet of its story-telling. The charm and magic of the Christmas season is not lost in the football pageantry, and in the same style, it really feels like the filmmakers have taken pains to nail some of the specifics of gridiron football, specifics that similar movies tend to lack, and which can quickly break immersion. It's the chemistry between Higman and Taylor, most of all, that makes Holiday Touchdown work. It's an easy romance between the pair.

Where Holiday Touchdown fails spectacularly, and plummets helplessly to the ground like a ball thrown by Patrick Mahomes when Jalen Carter gets in his face tonight, is that it chooses to focus on the wildly inferior Kansas City Chiefs when it could have focused on the Philadelphia Eagles. If Swift and Kelce were the inspiration for Holiday Touchdown, Philadelphia would make just as much sense for the setting. Swift grew up just outside the City of Brotherly Love and Travis Kelce's older and better-dressed brother, Jason, won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2018.

A green and white palette for the film would have been more pleasing than the Chiefs' eye-straining yellow and red, and with much more in terms of activities, restaurants, and culture in Philadelphia, Holiday Touchdown could have featured creative settings that simply aren't possible in Kansas City, Missouri. The construction and execution of Holiday Touchdown is effective, but it's easy to imagine how magical it could have been had the Philadelphia Eagles been at the center of the story.

For those who still want to enjoy a football movie and a Christmas movie, but don't want to subject themselves to the insufferable Chiefs glorification found in Holiday Touchdown, Christmas in the Spotlight is a charming film about a singer and a football player who give dating one another a shot, and have till the end of the holiday season to fall in love. Of course, the finest Christmas football movie is Invincible, where a plucky Philadelphian fulfills the greatest Christmas wish of all: playing for the Philadelphia Eagles.
