I can't work without these 3 gadgets (and why they make such a big difference)

2025 marks the fifth year of my being a remote worker. During that time, I quickly learned that a proper office setup is vital to achieving maximum work efficiency. I managed to build a great setup, complete with a desktop PC and a couple of monitors -- and my accessories make a world of difference.

A good selection of supporting devices can turn your basic office space into a proper place of work. Below is a list of PC accessories and other devices that have greatly helped me these past five years. I'd recommend these products to anyone who is thinking of becoming a remote worker or wants to improve their PC setup at home.

A good mechanical keyboard is arguably the most important tool for a remote worker. You'll be typing away for hours on end, so you need something that keeps up with you while also providing all-day comfort.

For that reason, I recommend the Hyper Alloy Origins Mechanical Gaming Keyboard. This is a standard, full-size keyboard with HX Aqua Tactile switches, which I adore. The Aqua switches allow me to type fast without straining my fingers. I don't have to push the key all the way down to register an input, so it's easy on the hands.

Plus, the size ensures that I don't miss inputs. I've tried smaller keyboards, but I always end up hitting the wrong key. Don't just take my word for it. Other people are fans of the Alloy Origins, too. A recent Reddit thread praises the keyboard for its durability and high-quality keycaps.

The RGB lighting can admittedly be distracting. If you don't want the lights or something smaller, I suggest checking out ZDNET's list of the best mechanical keyboards for other recommendations.

I live in a high-traffic area, so a lot of noise comes in through the windows. I've tried multiple headphones and earbuds to block outside sound, but none of them have done the job as well as the Soundcore Space One Pro.

These headphones provide powerful active noise cancellation capable of turning a busy city street into a whisper. They perform well, too. In my review, I point out how the Space One Pro excels in outputting "songs with a lot of bass and singing." With the latter, you can "enjoy the minute details in singers' performances."

Soundcore's device sports plush foam cushions that fit comfortably around my head. One of the downsides of ANC headphones is their price. They can be expensive, but the Space One Pro is a midrange model costing $200, though it goes on sale from time to time. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of these headphones, and I think you will too.

I've updated ZDNET's best laptop docking stations more times than I can count, and my favorite is the Belkin Connect Universal 11-in-1 Pro Dock. I primarily work on a desktop because it provides the functionality that I need, although I switch over to laptops every so often. Docking stations allow laptops to mimic PC towers by giving them the same wide functionality.

It adds 11 extra ports across multiple connection standards, including USB-A 3.2, Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, and a microSD card slot, all while doubling as a supportive base that improves airflow. The dock boasts impressive data transfer speeds, capable of moving large files between devices in mere seconds.

Peruse Amazon user reviews for the dock and you'll see people praise the dock for its great quality, wide range of connections, and compact design. High-end docking stations can be large; some look like bricks. But the Belkin Pro Dock is slimmer than most, fitting inside bags easily.

As stated earlier, I've been working from home for the past five years, and I review a lot of tech products, including but not limited to laptops, monitors, smartphones, and PC accessories. One thing I've learned in that time is that I'm picky. Even if I like a device, that doesn't necessarily mean that I will buy one for myself and use it on a regular basis. I have pretty strong opinions on what makes a product worth purchasing. For example, I've tried several keyboards before ultimately sticking with the HyperX Alloy Origins.

I am a cheap person. I don't like spending money on random things, especially now when there is a lot of economic uncertainty. So, before I buy something, I always make sure to do my homework. I do my research, check multiple shopping platforms, and consult with other ZDNET experts who know way more than I do.

For the main list, I have either tested each product personally or used it for years. I can say with total confidence that these are some of the best tech products I have ever used, and I fully endorse them. Below, I have included a couple of alternative devices. I haven't used them myself, but they come highly recommended from my fellow colleagues here at ZDNET.

Choosing between a laptop and a desktop depends on your needs. I use both, and each has its pros and cons. Laptops are obviously more flexible since you can go anywhere with them, but their limited selection of ports and single screen limit their usability. Desktops, on the other hand, typically offer more powerful hardware. Plus, they're better at supporting multiple accessories and displays..

Personally, I prefer a desktop computer. I've found that a PC tower paired with dual monitors suits my workflow much better.

In addition to my list of recommendations, I suggest investing in a good office chair. Just like with a keyboard, you'll be sitting for hours at a time, so comfort matters. ZDNET has a list of the 10 best office chairs, if you'd like some suggestions. You don't need anything fancy. I bought my chair from Target years ago for $60. At the very least, make sure the chair provides good back support.

I also strongly recommend getting a second monitor. It significantly boosts productivity by reducing the need to constantly switch between windows. You can easily split apps and browser tabs across both screens.
