Alexa, is there a cheap Echo in here?

I so wanted to say you can buy a smart speaker for under AU$30, but that's not happened this year. The Echo Pop was available for AU$29 last year, but Amazon had other plans for 2025, and the best I've seen this year is the compact Alexa-powered Pop go below the AU$50 mark.

It's still affordable and is available in a few fun colours, which means it could well be a lovely Christmas gift for a family member or friend, if you don't want one for yourself. With Alexa available at your beck and call, you'll be able to play music, ask questions, set alarms, create shopping lists, check the weather and so much more with just a simple voice command (look, Mum, no hands!).

Amazon discounted it down to AU$47 (down from AU$79) ahead of Prime Big Deal Days and that offer is still available, making it a decent purchase for starting a smart home setup.

PSA: Amazon always leads with deals on its own devices

I don't think I can recall a time when Amazon didn't always follow the same formula with its Prime Day sales. The retailer always posts deals on own-brand Amazon devices ahead of the official sale dates as a kind of 'warm up' of sorts, and that's what happened this time round too.

There were quite a few good discounts on some select Echo devices and Fire TV Sticks, as well as Blink and Ring cameras, but Amazon held back the Kindle deals... until now. There are more Amazon devices up for grabs and they make excellent Christmas gifts (if you're not looking to treat yourself).

I generally shop for my Amazon devices early to beat the rush, then pick up any other big-ticket items during the official sale itself. A lot of people hold out for the big day to see if devices will go any lower, but from my experience with Prime deals, once Amazon posts a Prime-member exclusive price, it generally never goes any lower.

It's Prime time again

Good morning, Aussie shoppers! I hope you're fortified with plenty of caffeine and have had a hearty breakfast because you're going to need it.

Prime Week is here! Yes, I'm calling it that because 'Prime Big Deal Days' is quite the mouthful and 'Prime Day' just seems wrong for a sale that's 7 days long. This sale is a fantastic opportunity for you to treat yourself to something new or get your Christmas shopping started. That's one thing you don't want to leave to the last minute, now, is it?

One thing to note about October's Prime Week: I've covered all of Amazon's sales right from its Australian inception and I haven't always seen as good discounts during this time of year as I've seen during the July Prime sale and November's Black Friday. So while it's still a good opportunity to score a bargain or two, it might be worth waiting for Black Friday next month.

If you can't wait, however, and a price looks good to you, I'd advice you pick it up in case there are stock issues later in the year. So bookmark this page and allow my team and myself to guide you through the best tech offers on Amazon right now.
