Fans were overjoyed when Karl Urban’s casting as Johnny Cage was announced for Mortal Kombat II. While the makers didn’t introduce the iconic character in the 2021 feature, the success of the film certainly pushed the ante for the makers to make it as close to the source material as possible. Now we have our first look at Urban in character, and it's f***ing good.
In the new poster revealed on the movie’s X (formerly Twitter) account, Urban can be seen in his game-accurate look with bikes flying in his background, complete with an on-brand explosion. The tag line appropriately reads, “Uncaged Fury.” Cage was noticeably absent in the first film, so it seems clear that the film is looking to make up for lost time with the explosive first look.
Karl Urban Is Perfectly Cast in ‘Mortal Kombat II’
The Boys’ star is loved for his eccentric, almost unhinged performance as Billy Butcher in the series, which makes him a fan favorite for playing Johnny Cage in the upcoming movie. While we know him as the swag and certainly isn’t afraid of the gore, Urban will blow your mind in Mortal Kombat 2, as divulged by his co-star Ludi Linpreviously. “Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, I hope you guys are ready because he's going to blow your socks off,” he teased. The actor further went on to appreciate Urban’s performance, revealing that his presence “really fills out the entire movie, he fills out the role,” adding,
“There's just a level of expertise, there's some toolbox, the essence that they bring to the role just adds another dimension to it. In both cases I really look up to actors like this that can really bring a movie to the next level.”
The upcoming movie will follow Cole Young and his allies as they prepare for the Mortal Kombat tournament which will decide the fate of humanity. The film is directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater. Along with Urban and Lin, the movie also casts Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, and Josh Lawson as Kano. Further rounding off the cast are Max Huang, Tati Gabrielle, Martyn Ford, Adeline Rudolph, and more.
Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled to be theatrically released on October 24. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates and check out the new poster above.
