Kristin Davis reveals which Oscar-winning actress she beat out for the role of Brooke on Melrose Place

Kristin Davis has made TV history playing Charlotte on the hit series Sex And The City and its reboot And Just Like That. 

But before that the actress, 59, starred as Brooke Armstrong on Melrose Place in 1995.

The competition for the part was fierce, the actress told People, as she shared she won the role over another actress.

When Kristin arrived for the audition two other hopefuls were already there. 

'I remember going in, and it was just the three of us, and everyone was very nice,' she said of the others, who were invited to meet the executives one at a time.

'And I remember Hilary Swank came out, and she seemed so young, and she had kind of shorter hair and kind of sporty, and I was like, "Uh-oh,"' she said of her impression of actress Hilary Swank. 

When Swank exited the audition she told the other, 'I totally blew it,' as they tried to comfort her. 

However, young hopeful Swank must have made an impression as she was cast in Spelling's other hit show, Beverly Hills, 90210.

She played Carly Reynolds in the 1997-1998 season. 

After leaving 90210, Swank went on to work in a daring project, Boys Don't Cry.

Her portrayal of transgender man Brandon Teena in the 1999 drama earned her the Best Actress Academy Award.

She earned a second Oscar for her portrayal of a paralyzed boxer in 2004's Million Dollar Baby. 

'Obviously she goes on to win two Oscars,' Davis said of beating Swank for the role. 'She did fine. She did fine.'

Davis also recalled feeling 'so stressed out' about what to wear to her audition with the powerful show creator Aaron Spelling. 

She remembered that 10 executives were lined up in a row to see what she could do.

SATC creator Darren Star was 'the only one' who seemed to be paying attention to her. 

Davis had decided to base her outfit for the audition on the halter wedding dress Melrose Place star Heather Locklear had worn in her wedding to Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora in December 1994.

She bought a similar-looking bustier.

'I had this whole plan that I was going to strip my jacket off in the scene,' she explained. 

'I did it, and clearly it worked out. But I mean, I was just riddled with anxiety, okay?'
