Karla Sofía Gascón Allegedly Called Selena Gomez a “Rich Rat” Amid Hailey Bieber Feud Rumors

Who says Selena Gomez can't still be proud of Emilia Pérez?

The "Lose You to Love Me" singer addressed the controversy surrounding her costar Karla Sofía Gascón for the first time since the Oscar-nominated actress' offensive tweets emerged at the end of January.

"I'm really good," Selena said during a Q&A at the 2025 Santa Barbara Film Festival Feb. 9 when asked how she's holding up amid the chaos surrounding her film. "Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just, I’m just grateful and live with no regrets."

The 32-year-old added, "And I would do this movie over and over again if I could."

Selena's thoughts on the matter were of particular interest, too, because a screenshot of one of Karla's alleged tweets showed the Spanish actress calling the Disney Channel alum a "rich rat" over a news story debunking rumors of a feud between Selena and Hailey Bieber, wife of the Only Murders in the Building star's ex Justin Bieber.

The Golden Globe winner denied the veracity of that particular post.

"It's not mine, of course," Karla told CNN en Español in Spanish in an on-camera interview posted online Feb. 2—one month before the 2025 Oscars—when asked if she wrote the tweet in an insulting way to Selena. "I've never said anything about my partner, I would never refer to her like that."

E! News reached out for comment from Karla and Selena over the controversy and did not hear back.

This is not the only image of an offensive social media message that many internet users have attributed to Karla—who deactivated her X account Jan. 30—that has gone viral in recent days.

Karla, the first openly trans performer to be nominated for an Oscar at this year's show, also dismissed the idea of renouncing her nomination amid the backlash.

"I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job and what is being valued is my acting work," she said. "I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone."

She had in recent days repeatedly apologized in the press and Instagram for making controversial remarks in the past, without confirming specific offensive comments. She also suggested that fake quotes have been attributed to her.

"They have created posts as if it were me, insulting even my colleagues," Karla wrote on Instagram Feb. 1, "things that I wrote to glorify as if they were criticism, jokes as if they were reality, words that without the background only seem like hate."

She added, "I cannot repair my past actions, I can only say that today I am not the same person as 10 or 20 years ago."
