Ke Huy Quan and Sean Astin's reunion in Love Hurts is yet another sign that Goonies is in great need of a sequel. Action/comedy Valentine's Day film Love Hurts sees the former take on the role of a former hitman turned realtor, who desperately wants to escape his past and live a normal life. The story is very tried and true, not breaking too much new ground, with the biggest draw of the film being Love Hurts' casting of Ke Huy Quan in his first leading role, as well as the inclusion of another of his Goonies costars.
While Love Hurts' reviews have been very mixed, the film does have plenty of redeeming qualities, with Ke Huy Quan's Oscar-winning acting and action standing out as the major highlight of the film throughout its reviews. While Love Hurts' ending does reach a sweet enough conclusion, the most heartwarming moment of the film was definitely the reunion between the two Goonies stars, with the relationship between Ke Huy Quan's Marvin and his former costar serving as a prelude to what could be seen in a continuation of the Goonies franchise.
Love Hurts Brings Ke Huy Quan & Sean Astin Back Together For The First Time Since The Goonies
The Two Goonies Stars Reunite On Film For the First Time
Back in 1985, the now-classic film The Goonies was released in cinemas, featuring a cast of child and teenage actors, including household names like Josh Brolin and Sean Astin, as well as Love Hurts star Ke Huy Quan. Brolin went on to have a very prolific career, and Sean Astin would be forever beloved as one of the best characters in the Lord of the Rings franchise, but Quan's career unfortunately stagnated, and he was forced to retire from acting for nearly 20 years.

Where To Watch Love Hurts: Showtimes & Streaming Status
Ke Huy Quan stars in the new 2025 action movie Love Hurts, and here is where the movie can be watched, including showtimes and its streaming status.
However, Quan's career has seen a huge resurgence since his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, culminating in his first leading role in Love Hurts. He is back in the spotlight, and that has allowed him to reunite with Sean Astin in Love Hurts. Astin plays Cliff, who acts as Quan's character's mentor, the person who helped him find his footing after escaping from the life of organized crime. It's a sweet relationship in the film, made all the more engaging due to the actor's past with each other.
Ke Huy Quan & Sean Astin's Chemistry Proves Goonies 2 Is Still Worth Doing
Astin And Quan Haven't Missed A Beat

While Sean Astin only plays a minor role in Love Hurts, he has one big scene with Ke Huy Quan's character Marvin, and it absolutely stands out as one of the most heartwarming moments in the film. The two actors clearly still work really well with each other, even 40 years after their last performance together, so giving them a project like The Goonies 2 seems like an absolute slam dunk, especially if the rest of the cast are willing to return as well.
Even during his Oscar acceptance speech, Ke Huy Quan thanked his "Goonies brother for life" Jeff Cohen, clearly indicating the love that everyone in the movie still has for each other.
Since Quan's career was revitalized, conversations about a sequel to The Goonies have been coming up much more often, and Love Hurts definitely seems to be something of a precursor to that actually happening. Most of The Goonies stars' careers have gone in very different directions since that film, without much crossover between them, but now, Love Hurts has proven that there are still plenty of opportunities for them to make something together, with the obvious choice being The Goonies 2.
Anytime the cast of The Goonies get together, there is clearly still a lot of love between them, and a desire to work together again. The obvious example of this was in the 2020 Covid-19 reunion hosted by Josh Gad, which brought all the stars of The Goonies together to reminisce about working on the film, as well as remaking classic moments from the film. Even during his Oscar acceptance speech, Ke Huy Quan thanked his "Goonies brother for life" Jeff Cohen, clearly indicating the love that everyone in the movie still has for each other.
Goonies 2 Can Give Ke Huy Quan & Sean Astin A Better Movie After Love Hurts
That Project Could Serve Both Their Strengths Much Better

Ke Huy Quan is an excellent actor, with the most obvious evidence of that being his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, giving him his first Academy Award, which was more than deserved. Sean Astin hasn't won an award of that caliber, with the cast of The Lord of the Rings only being given one acting nomination for Ian McKellen in Fellowship of the Ring, but his generational performance in all three of those movies absolutely speaks for itself. With that said, it is unfortunate that Love Hurts isn't the best showcase of their immense acting talents.
Love Hurts was released in cinemas on February 7, 2025, opening behind Dog Man and Heart Eyes for around a $2.6 million box office debut.
While their performances in the film are solid, the story surrounding their roles isn't the best, evidenced by Love Hurts' dismal Rotten Tomatoes rating, as even these two great performers couldn't make the movie work as well as it should. Something like The Goonies 2 could be much more suited to showing off how the two of them, as well as the rest of the cast, have matured as actors in the many years since the original, especially if the same creative team is able to come back as well.
Is Goonies 2 Happening? What The Cast Have Said
Rumors Have Been Circling For Decades At This Point
While a sequel to The Goonies has been talked about for years, the conversations have come up much more in recent years, enough that The Goonies 2 has been confirmed to be in development. However, the film is very early on in its life, with very little having been confirmed other than the fact that Christopher Columbus, writer of the original, is set to pen a treatment for the film. However, no other announcements have been made surrounding the project, including any sort of casting, so nothing is set in stone at this point.

There are plenty of directions that The Goonies 2's story could go, but the main draw of the original was always the great characters, and they would undoubtedly be the biggest draw for a sequel. Seeing how these kids have evolved and grown up since their adventures with the Inferno would be wonderful, especially considering the ups and downs that the film's cast have gone through.
Ke Huy Quan himself has spoken about The Goonies 2, and what he knows about it, which is seemingly very little. He said that there have been scripts written many times over the years, but the main bottleneck has been Steven Spielberg, who has the final say over whether a script is approved, as he made the story for the original film. Quan has said that he would definitely love to make the movie if a script is greenlit, which the small reunion in Love Hurts is absolutely referencing.
